PAGE NINETY ONE.         The Combine Siege Line, near Amazonis Prime.

Now this is not the end.  It is not even the beginning of the end.  But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.  – Winston Churchill

By the moons of Fear and Dread (Phobos and Deimos), it is Friday again- and June!  There are just five pages left in Free Mars: Riot Girls.  That’s mind-bottling.  It’s been just about two years now, and it has apparently gone by really fast.  I look back on our first pages fondly, but with the very distinct feeling that I’ve come a long way as a writer.  I know Nic feels the same way about the art.

This week the battle continues.  As the Jovian Guild-Fleet covers their attack from orbit, the real work is being done miles below by these guys: the grunts.  Infantry.  Some things about war never change.

Again, Nic conveys the chaos of battle with a deft hand.  I also think we tried to catch something of an iconic moment for the Free Mars forces.  Like Alexander’s left at Guagamela, or Chamberlain’s 20th Maine on Little Round Top, certain battles seem to have that one moment where victory and defeat are equally balanced.  Things could go to shizz very quickly or the day could be won.  A whole campaign can hinge on a moment like that, a whole war.  I think, in a humble tribute to the Marines at Iwo Jima, this standard-bearer climbing to the top of a Combine siege tower might tip that scale.  Seeing their new flag go forward has to mean something.

Nic:  This week’s music pairing is my suggestion. Bad Religion has always been one of my favourite old school punk bands and ‘The Process of Belief’ is a perfect example of their mastery of the punk sound. Distinctly angry and rebellious, it is a testament to the anti-establishment punk ideals and a challenge to the status-quo; nothing better for our Martian revolutionaries to hear whilst they go up against the bunkers of the CSC.  Kyoto Now!

A quick thanks to Joe Rodriguez, a fellow artist, comic fan and friend, for helping us with the flag design.

The band is back next week.  The book is at the printer.  We get closer to the end of the beginning….

PS- I also can’t believe that by this time next week Prometheus will be out.  O.  M.  G.
