PAGE SIXTY. Io.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet.
Another Friday, Marsers. We proudly present P60 (I’m actually pretty impressed with how close we are to my original page schedule). Anyway, this week sees us off our Martian homeworld. Instead, we find ourselves on Io, Jupiter’s innermost moon. I’ve always thought Io was a cool place for a colony, ever since I first saw Outland (anyone remember that movie?- “My men? My men are shit”.)
Io is also the world, after Mars of course, that I’ve written the most notes about. It will definitely be featured prominently in future ‘Free Mars’ tales. For now, though, we get to see its capital, Prometheus City. Io is honeycombed with mining settlements, frontier towns, and thousands of miles of abandoned shafts. Unlike the centralized government on Mars, Io is partitioned into spheres of influence. Various guilds, mining clans, and cartels all vie for power, making Io a bit lawless. Think Mars, but slightly more dangerous and significantly more chaotic.
Nic, as usual, matched exactly what I had in my head when I wrote this page. I’m particularly fond of the sulphuric tinge to the city, as well as the stalactite and stalagmite hab-spires.
This week, I’m gonna go with Foster the People and ‘Pumped Up Kicks.’ It has a creepy/dark mellow-ness to it that I think fits nicely with the shot of our orbiting moon.
Until next week,
