PAGE TWENTY FIVE. Interior commercial freightlifter. Jovis. 15:37 MST. Jovis happens to be the fifth day of the Martian week, corresponding with Earth’s Thursday, going with the Darian nomenclature.
We’ve come to the end of Nic’s ‘Red Period.’ I still think this last sequence and its lack of color showed just how detailed Nic’s art really is.
On the writing side, I hope we were successful in demonstrating that there’s more to our girls than might meet the eye….
Music-wise this week, I’m choosing one more “eerie” song to go with the final red page. Lush, ‘Light From A Dead Star.’ Lush is a band that I almost forgot about, but have been revisiting lately. I love Meriel Barham’s voice and could almost hear Vexx’s backing vocals sounding similar.
A couple house-keeping notes. First, we have finally got all the prints together. We have one larger poster and two smaller mini-prints and one postcard. I’m compiling all the info and setting up a ‘Volcano City Mercantile’ page this weekend. So look for it next week. We’re also doing some website/server maintenance, so if you find us “down” you’ll know why.
Dave

great page and i like the track.
The artwork is fantastic (when is it ever not?) but I have to admit that that last line about Jovis confuses me. I read what you said about it basically being the Martian Thursday, but I just don’t get it. Perhaps there’s some other meaning or reference that I’m just oblivious to.
First, sorry the comments were shut down for a while- we had some server/upgrade issues that had to be worked through. Everything went smoothly thanks to Mr. Weeks. We’d be naffing lost without Matt.
Brian- there’s kind of an “inside” joke there, for sure. Does anyone get the reference? I have a bet riding on this, so if you know it speak up.
DP
Wow…I feel like a dumbass. After a grand total of about 30 seconds of research I’ve found out what you were referencing. What’s sad is I saw The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy for the first time less than a month ago.
She sure doesn’t look a whole lot like Arthur Dent… but apparently the Thursday bit is more universal than we thought.
@Brian- You saw it? I can’t remember if they have the Thursday line in the movie, but so far as I recall the only thing worthwhile in the entire film was the song at the beginning. I am slightly bitter about that movie. Just slightly.
The art is beautiful as always. I presume we will be getting some more information on the revolutionary movement shortly?
@fourthingsandalizard- Yeah, Arthur says it to Ford when they’re at the pub near the beginning of the movie.
I don’t own the movie, I had to look it up on megavideo to remind myself of exactly when he said it.
I am rather curious if the other girls will ask or were paying enough attention to vexx’s words after she killed that guy to ask whom else she has off’d or if we’ll ever find out, food for thought , also im really loving the art work by nick its very realistic and well quite exceptional well done sir, and the dialog is engaging and filled with subtle clues and hints to the charater of our heroines also the occasional easter egg very well done to you Dave , and while im on this little tangant while im not expert in the effects vacuums have on human bodies i am quite sure that any exposed skin especialy eyes would result in a painful death where your blood would boil and you eyes explode only after all the air and fluids in your boy were forceably pulled from you through your skin un less that has been some previous unmention terraforming process on mars to give it a low atmosphere much like climbing a mountian while breathing is achiveable it quite difficult and your breaths are labored
comichero-
First, thanks for the kind words. That means a lot, about the art and the writing, and it appreciated by Nic and I both.
Second, you are not incorrect in your observation that a vacuum/low atmosphere environment could potentially cause one problems, such as the situation you so graphically (and skillfully, I might add) described. But I would refer you to the PAGE TWENTY Comments section. For the sake of expediency, I’ll repost them here:
“Brian- good question. The long answer will be addressed eventually in one of our background pieces and I’ll go into the details there. But, your query deserves an answer. Basically, there have been a number of terraforming attempts. None have been completely successful, however. A hydrogen embargo in 2250 sort of slowed the progress of the atmosphere building. The planet is warmer and the atmosphere more Earth-like, but a good amount still leaks out into space.
So, if you’re in the lowlands, you can get away with breathers and thermal clothing. The higher you go the more problematic it becomes and that’s where you still need pressure suits.”
